Joel Chace, Flâneurs

Flâneurs

(from Physics)

Certain sections of the arcade

closed off, so idlers gravitate toward

a display of catafalques, the need

for which keeps growing.  Life is largely

formed by individual

organisms that interact with

their environments…Through that clear,

arched ceiling, sun’s a dim beacon, but still

gratis…and embody mechanisms

that keep themselves away from

thermal equilibrium using

available free energy.  Commerce’s

sinuous lanes merge into this path

between rows of shops.  Crystals, votive

candles, uniforms, jars, ottomans,

masks.  Long, narrow asylum

hothouse:  everything opens, closes,

emerges  --  hypnagogic,

blurred  --  thrives, settles

to zero.  Singular galaxy

of the dead.  Singular

universe of the unborn.

Singular.  We are undoubtedly

limited parts of nature, and we

are so even as

understanders of this same nature.
